Hot Days, Cool Greens

great greens, cool cucumbers, bountiful berries

Beautiful berries

We’re delighted to have our own blackberries with us this week alongside blueberries from our friends at Vulture’s Roost in Ottsville.  Cindy and John tend this 4 acre orchard with organic practices and are fabulous farm friends to have.  We’re so glad to be sharing the fruits of their work with you again this weekend!  By the by, either or both of these berries would be a great choice for baking up a Texas-style cobbler.

Essential Summer veggies

The summer veggies are rolling in in this recent heat.  Green beans are back this week in full force, ready to jump into a bright summer side dish with tomatoes and potatoes.

Returning, too, are patty pan summer squash, which are well suited to any of your favorite zucchini recipes especially when paired with other summer favorites in a simple pasta supper.

We’re also bringing our favorite pickling cucumbers; these smaller varieties have a slightly thicker skin which means they stay crisp in any brine when pickled - they’re also a fine choice for snacking with or without peeling.  If you’re thinking pickling, a small batch of spicy pickled okra may be just the weekend project you’re looking for to make use of our red and green okra.

Digging for gold

We’ve officially dug all our spring potatoes and will have gold potatoes with us this week. We’re also digging more crisp carrots, perfect for a spicy salad.  Stalwart scallions are back alongside sweet onions are along for all allium needs from grilling to salad topping.  Our much-adored fresh garlic is back, too, as we dig up the rest for curing and storing - enjoy this summer treat while you can!

Gorgeous greens

Lettuce is on its summer hiatus, but in spite of the heat our dark leafy greens are growing on.  Red Russian kale remains a salad favorite with its tender-crisp texture and mild flavor while lacinato “dino” kale is a great choice for quick sautes and omelettes.  Popular for sautes, consider rainbow Swiss chard for raw preparations as well, like pairing these leaves with bright flavors and some extra crunch in an easy summer salad.

Fresh cut herbs and flowers

For your table we’ll be bringing fresh cut bouquets this week, and for your plate plenty of fresh cut herbs.  Look out for cutting celery, basil and parsley to add some extra oomph to your favorite summer dishes.

Thank you for your support + feedback.

We appreciate your taking on this season with us and we look forward to seeing you at Market this weekend!

Stay well.

Regards,

Rosemary + Pete
