Summer is settling in

hot weather, cool greens, gorgeous blooms

Final call for red potatoes

This week we’re digging up the last row of our red potatoes, the essential spuds for potato salad or roasting for breakfast - yellow potatoes are fast on their heels, so look out for those soon.

More roots are on their way, including carrot bunches with plenty of greens, ideal for a quick carrot top pesto.  You’ll also find our first fresh sweet onions alongside our steady scallions.  Back again this week are beets, perfect for pickling if you’re into that sort of thing.

Classic Summer veggies

Of course we’re bringing green cabbage with us this week - it’s still slaw season, after all.  Back again are green beans, too, for breezy summer sides like a simple saute or a tasty salad with goat cheese.

Our favorite patty pan summer squash are along, too; these little “flying saucer” squash can be used in any recipe where you’d use zucchini and are an ideal choice for easy grilling.  Simply trim off the stem and slice them right in half, toss with oil and your favorite seasoning and throw them on the grill for a tasty side or sandwich filling.

Great greens

We’re approaching the end of our first mini season of salad greens, so pick up some summer salad mix or green leaf lettuce for your lettuce fix this week.

The tireless trio of dark leafy greens are in full force this week, from the robust rainbow Swiss chard to the tender red Russian kale and the every-favorite lacinato “Tuscan” kale.  Running out of ways to enjoy these healthful leaves?  Look no further than this gallery of 22 ways to cook leafy greens for some kitchen inspiration.

Fresh cut herbs and flowers

Summer flowers are feeling the heat and they’re lighting up our fresh cut bouquets this week with a rainbow of zinnia.  Of course we’re bringing some tasty fresh herbs - cutting celery and basil.  Most folks have their own favorite pesto recipe, but not everyone knows all the top tips for freezing that summer flavor to enjoy all winter long.

Thank you for your support + feedback.

We appreciate your taking on this season with us and we look forward to seeing you at Market this weekend!

Stay well.

Regards,

Rosemary + Pete
